It occurred in the first Alvin and then again most recently in Planet 51. Of particular annoyance to me is something that has become increasingly popular in Hollywood: big names being vocally unrecognisable. Its these 'cute girl' routines which provide the bulk of the enjoyment as Alvin, Simon and Theodore's music acts become tired very fast. Brittany, Jeanette and Eleanor (voiced by Applegate, Faris and Poehler respectively) provide two things: firstly, a reason for more girls to watch, secondly, and most importantly, the chance for the film to include female tunes.

The major upside to the movie is still the song and dance numbers, which are turned up to eleven thanks to the arrival of The Chipettes. And worst of all the shallowness of the plot can't be redeemed by numerous hit songs getting 'munked', like achieved by its predecessor. The acting is noticeably worse, Jason Lee essentially being replaced by the far less appealing Zachary Levi is the main contributor to this problem. There's no effort to even mask the predictability in this one, the filmmakers just concede to the fact there are no surprises. I know it was predictable, terribly acted and lacking in substance, but I liked it nonetheless. So put the movie on for them, and then leave them to it when the squeaky, high pitched voices become too much to bear.OK, so I was one of those people who actually enjoyed the first Alvin. And you know what? There's nothing kids love more than jokes they consider to be near the knuckle. This is singing chipmunks who make jokes about eating too much and farting. This isn't some epic tale of love and romance. Look, anything titled "The Squeakquel" is not going to be high brow stuff.

Still, that's not to say that people won't enjoy the movie. This trailer doesn't give anything away in terms of plot, except for the arrival of the girls, but that's possibly because there isn't much of a plot to give away in the first place. I'd also like to know why a talking chipmunk is so readily accepted by everyone, and why human females swoon over Alvin's flirting. What are the odds? Where are these chipmunks coming from? I'd like to know. This time, the all-singing, all-dancing chipmunk trio have competition in the form of three girl chipmunks, who also sing and dance. After the massive success of the first film, Alvin and the Chipmunks, it's little surprise to know that Fox commissioned a sequel.

Love them or loathe them (and I am leaning toward the latter), the chipmunks certainly know how to make a film that pulls younger viewers in. Jason Lee was meant to have a larger role in this movie but due to scheduling conflicts with My Name is Earl, a lot of his scenes were re-written to use Zachary Levi's character instead.Īh, the Chipmunks are back. The plot of Alvin, Simon, and Theodore meeting the female chipmunks, Eleanor, Jeanette and Brittany, is reused from the first episode of Alvin and the Chipmunks.
